Northampton County Historical & Genealogical Society marks 120 Years with time capsule celebration

The Northampton County Historical & Genealogical Society, a cornerstone of local history preservation since 1906, is celebrating its 120th anniversary with “For the Ages: A Time Capsule Birthday Bash” on Thursday, March 26, at the Sigal Museum.

The free or low-cost evening event, running from 5 to 7 p.m. at 342 Northampton St. in Easton, will feature remarks at 6 p.m., followed by birthday cake and a champagne toast.

As the centerpiece of the milestone, the society is assembling a time capsule to be sealed and stored for 120 years. Guests are encouraged to bring a meaningful two-dimensional item — no larger than 10 by 17 inches — suitable for long-term preservation. Contributors will complete donation paperwork on site and personally place their item into the capsule.

Suggested contributions include handwritten or typed letters to the future, family or community photographs, children’s drawings, poems, stories, personal reflections, newspaper clippings, event programs, flyers, artwork, or other documents that reflect life in Northampton County today.

“For 120 years, our society has preserved the stories of Northampton County,” organizers said in an announcement. “This event honors our past, celebrates the present, and looks to the future by creating a direct connection across generations.”

Admission is free for members and $15 for non-members. A “Leaf of Legacy” sponsorship level of $120 includes four event tickets and an engraved leaf on the Tree Exhibition in the museum’s permanent galleries, offering donors a lasting presence in the institution.

The Sigal Museum, operated by the society, houses significant collections of pre-European settlement artifacts, decorative arts, textiles, farming implements, and colonial furniture, and serves as a hub for exploring the county’s role in American history.

The time capsule event aims to blend celebration, reflection, and community participation, ensuring that glimpses of 2026 life endure for future residents to discover in 2146.
